Twiggs and Melman

Twiggs is the eldest, of the two at 20 years old.

He is over 18ft tall, and he absolutely loves carrots.

Melman being a bit younger at just 8 years old, stands around 16ft tall, and his favorite snack is celery.

Both of these beautiful male giraffes are Reticulated giraffes, also known as the Somali giraffe, a subspecies native to the horn of Africa. There is approximately 8,500 individuals living in the wild.

There are 9 subspecies of Giraffes. These majestic animals spend most of their time eating, and they only sleep 5 - 30 minutes a day. They are the tallest living land mammal, and can stand up to 20ft tall.

Unfortunately, the giraffe population is dwindling.  As of 2016, just over 97,000 giraffes remained in the wild. The population has declined 40% in 30 years.

There are now approximately 68,000 left in the wild. The remaining herds are fragmented and face multiple threats from habitat loss, to poaching.
